CD / DVD / USB Devices
CD, CD-R/W et CD-Rom
5-inch CDs
The standard size CD-ROM (5.0”) is a proven and logical choice:
it is easily read on any computer CD reader, allows you to quickly
disseminate a significant volume of content (up to 700 Mb) directly
to the user, and may be produced to include musical pieces that may
be read on standard CD players. Still the most popular product used
in replication / duplication today.
Moreover, high capacity and “universality” of 5.0” CD-ROMs are the
reasons why 5.0” CD-Rs (recordable CD-ROMs) with custom-made
silkscreening are more and more used for back up purposes (government,
insurance companies, police services, private companies…).
Finally, CD-ROMs have an important advantage: they can be identified
with a unique code, put on each CD-ROM at the time of replication /
duplication. This allows to unlock online and offline content
accessed through the interface located on the CD. That’s what we
call ibridID®

3-inch CDs
Due to its reduced size, the 3.0” CD-ROM attracts its fair share
of attention. Its reduced size does not however prevent the device
from offering significant storage capacity (capacities up to 185
Mb). Keep in mind that this type of CD-ROM may only be read on
“drawer” type readers and may not be inserted into “slot” readers. |

Three types: Custom (precut), 5-inch and 3-inch |
Shaped CDs
Shaped CD-ROMs are standard CD-ROMs cut into different shapes (relating
to disk content or issuer) using a form punch. This allows a brewing
company, for instance, to produce an interactive CD-ROM in the shape
of a beer can, or an association to reproduce a storage device in
the shape of its logo. The capacity of shaped CD-ROMs varies
depending on the available surface following the cutting process.
This type of CD-ROM may only be read on “drawer” type readers and
may not be inserted into “slot” readers.
DVD, DVD-R/W and DVD-ROM
There are three different DVD types, differentiated by their respective capacities.
DVD-5
Has only one side and a single layer. Capacity: 4.7 Gb. May be silkscreened on one side. DVD-9
Has only one side (and may be silkscreened), but has two layers, which allows it to hold 8.5 Gb (“Dual-layer”). DVD-10
Two-sided, with only one layer on each side, it holds 9.4 Gb.
Cannot be silkscreened : information appear on a thin strip in the
middle of disc.
Their high capacity explains why DVDs are used for movies. In
addition to standard DVD content that may be viewed on the
television, DVD-ROMs may include multimedia applications and various
other elements designed for specific use on a computer (encyclopaedia,
data, software…).
Up to 8.5 Gb of content may be stored on a single DVD-ROM, and DVD-Rs
with custom-made silkscreening are more and more used for back up
purposes, since files (such as digital pictures) are becoming larger
and lager.

DualDisc
DualDisc is a two-sided CD: the face of
the device is a standard CD-ROM while
the reverse is a DVD. Two storage media
on the same device! |
This type of disk may be used by artists,
for example, to provide standard stereo
recordings of their songs on the face of
the disk (CD) while the over side (DVD)
may be used to store videos, a filmed
live performance or songs recorded in
Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Consult the ibridTM,
technology (developed by Nexun) section
on this site…

USB Flash Drives
Standard computers now typically provide a USB port on the face
of the unit, facilitating connection to portable devices such as MP3
players, digital cameras and Flash memory cards. The USB Flash Drives
has taken advantage of this feature, and its reduced size, to carve
its position in the storage device market. Capacities of this type
of storage device are ranging from 128 Mb to more than 8 Gb. |

Since prices for this kind of support have dropped down, it is now
more conceivable to use them on a commercial or promotional basis.
Moreover, since USB Flash Drives are
still new and attractive, they catch attention.
Les
USB Flash Drives can be silkscreened and may be subjected to a replication / duplication process as well as they may also be delivered “empty”.
Many USB Flash Drives models are offered,
in a choice of colours, lanyards and clips. |
