Standard Plastic
The most popular type of case for CDs and CD-ROMs, the
standard case is made of two transparent plastic sections (clear
or colour-tinted): the cover and the back section. These
sections are mounted together on hinge assemblies. |
A disk tray (often black but also available in transparent
clear and colour-tinted) is installed inside the back
section and is designed to secure the CD. The cover has
small tabs designed to secure the insert, liner sheet or
booklet. A sheet may also be placed between the disk tray
and back section. Standard cases are 5 9/16 in. (142 mm)
wide, by 4 7/8 in. (124 mm) high, and 3/8 in. (10 mm) thick. |

Slimline Plastic
The slimline case is similar to the standard case but only
half as thick. In addition to the difference in thickness,
the slimline disk tray is also different; the back section
is used to secure the CD as well (there is no tray mounted
into the back section). The back section is typically made
of black or transparent (clear or colour-tinted) plastic.
Keep in mind that, due to its design, an insert may not be
added behind a slimline tray, only the cover may be used for
inserts. Slimline cases are 5 9/16 in. (142 mm) wide, by 4
7/8 in. (124 mm) high, and 3/16 in. (5 mm) thick. |

Amaray (Single or Double)
Standard packaging for DVDs. The case exterior is wrapped in
a transparent slipcover that covers both the front and back
sections; an insert may be placed between the slipcover and
the case. Inside the open case, the left side usually
provides two tabs to secure a booklet, while the right side
provides the DVD tray. Though this type of case is typically
designed to store one or two DVDs, there are versions
designed to hold more. These cases are 5 ¼ in. (135 mm) wide,
by 7 ½ in. (191 mm) high, and ½ in. (14 mm) thick.

Cardboard
Cardboard sleeve used to package and store CDs (in lieu of
plastic case). Sleeves may be printed according to client
specifications and are available with one or more sections.
This type of packaging eliminates the need for additional
printed materials (sheets, foldouts, etc.)
See CD / DVD Jacket
section for more details.
